The Perseid Meteor Shower: August's Greatest Fireworks Show

Chances are, within a few minutes, you'll see a streak of light blaze silently across the sky — a tiny fragment of ancient comet burning up in Earth's atmosphere at 60 kilometers per second. When Is the Peak?
The Perseid meteor shower runs from roughly July 17 through August 24 each year, but the real action concentrates around the peak — which in 2026 falls on the night of August 11–12. During peak hours (typically between midnight and pre-dawn), experienced observers under dark skies can count 50 to 100 meteors per hour, with occasional fireballs bright enough to cast faint shadows.

Where Do Perseids Come From?
Every meteor shower has a parent body, and for the Perseids, that's Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle — a mountain-sized chunk of ice and rock discovered independently by Lewis Swift and Horace Tuttle in 1862. With an orbital period of about 130 years, the comet last swept through the inner solar system in 1992 and won't return until 2125. But it doesn't need to be here in person to put on a show.
As Swift-Tuttle completes its long loop around the Sun, it sheds a trail of dust and debris along its orbital path. Every August, Earth crosses this trail, and those particles — most no larger than a grain of sand or a small pebble — slam into our upper atmosphere and incinerate in a flash of light. What you see as a meteor is essentially the glowing air around the particle, superheated by friction.
The shower appears to radiate from the constellation Perseus in the northeastern sky, which is how it earned its name. But you don't need to stare at Perseus — meteors can appear anywhere across the sky.
How to Watch: Tips for the Best Experience

The Science Behind the Spectacle
What makes Perseid meteors particularly striking is their speed and frequency. At roughly 59 km/s, they hit the atmosphere faster than most other annual showers, which produces bright, sharp streaks with persistent trains — glowing ionized trails that can linger for a second or two after the meteor itself is gone. Some Perseids are genuine fireballs, rivaling Venus in brightness, leaving behind greenish or reddish glows.
The shower also benefits from a favorable geometry: the radiant point climbs higher in the sky as the night progresses, meaning more meteors per hour the later you stay up. The sweet spot is typically between 2 a.m. and dawn.
