Three Stars, One Unforgettable Summer Night

If you've ever stepped outside on a warm July or August evening, tilted your head back, and spotted three impossibly bright stars dominating the sky overhead, you've already met the Summer Triangle — you just may not have known its name.

  • Altair (in Aquila) — the fastest spinner of the group, rotating so rapidly that it bulges noticeably at its equator. Altair is a near neighbor by cosmic standards, sitting just 17 light-years away, and it moves through space fast enough that its position shifts perceptibly over thousands of years.

When and Where to Look

Through July and into August 2026, the Summer Triangle rises in the east shortly after sunset and climbs toward the zenith — the point directly overhead — by midnight. For observers in the Northern Hemisphere between about 20°N and 55°N latitude, it's essentially unmissable on a clear night.

The best strategy: find a spot away from streetlights, give your eyes about 15 minutes to dark-adapt, then look nearly straight up. Vega will catch your eye first — it's the brightest point overhead with that distinctive cool, bluish tint.
